I hope that Earthan was not too disappointing. I had originally tried to get permission to use Bradgate Park, Leicester; this was refused. Charlton Forest, another possible area, on the South Downs is closed. So it was Eartham. Earthan is perhaps a little small and certainly lacking in variety. If there was any theme in the planning it was to keep you off the paths whilst using the minimum number of controls in the forest. This seems to have worked in part; I'm only sorry there were rather more brashings and brambles than were expected. Hanging the controls low seems to have ensured that the hit-and-miss brigade spent most of the time doing the latter. I hope that this wasn't seen as too unsporting. I apologise for the confusion over the length of the A course - part 1 was the longer leg, the total length remaining at 13k. It was good to see the honours shared on the A courses and whatever the results a Varsity Match is one of the few sporting events that disproves the adage that no one will remember who came second. A few thanks are called for; to my Mum for making the arrangements for the social and accommodation - she thanks you for the chocolates; to Jackie, Colin and John Beattie for running the start and finish; to SO for the equipment; to you for the tankard and drink - thanks. Naomi Sercombe thanks you for the card. (SB - drink is next time.) See you next year, Nick Lawrence (JOK)
